This album is pulled together from takes across several sessions, from January 1959 through May 1961, including the infamous three days in October 1960 (21, 24 and 26) that yielded the landmark My Favorite Things release and a couple dozen additional tracks that would show up on other Atlantic collections over the years.
Because of the multiple session dates there is a tremendous variety of players on this record, including but not limited to: Freddie Hubbard, Eric Dolphy, Milt Jackson, and of course McCoy Tyner and Elvin Jones.
"Untitled Original", which would ultimately become "Exotica" gets an especially interesting airing out here. Tyner and Coltrane display an incredible simpatico from very early in their working relationship.
The three tracks that originally made up side two of the LP are all cuts with Milt Jackson. All three are enjoyable but the closer, "Blues Legacy" has a great feel.
Search out this one on vinyl. The warmth of the recordings are worth hearing on that format.
