Electric Hot Tuna - 1976-09-11 - Long Island Arena Commack NY

First some context from Wikipedia:
"The year 1974 marked a departure from their primarily bluesy, acoustic style when Hot Tuna morphed into a heavy rock band. The albums America's Choice (1975), Yellow Fever (1975), and Hoppkorv (1976), showcase a power trio with the addition of new drummer Bob Steeler. This trilogy is referred to by the group as their "rampage years."...Hot Tuna live performances during this period were typified by free-flow improvisational jams and very long sets (up to six hours uninterrupted) with extended versions of their studio material. Because of this, they are often considered a forerunner of modern jam bands..."
This is one of those shows with "very long sets"...

Recently put out for free by the band through its digital download site, this show is two sets, 30 songs and clocks in at 4 hours, 55 minutes and 2 seconds...crazy...

Along the way there are over the top versions of many Tuna war horses...Serpent of Dreams, Water Song, 28+ minutes worth of Funky #7, etc...This band is more Black Sabbath than Summer of Love.

This download amounts to a four disc set. The band is Jorma Kaukonen on guitar and vocals, Jack Casady on bass and Bob Steeler on drums.

  1. Five to six hour gigs!!! Heady times by the sounds of it. I'm tempted to load this so I can threaten people with it!

  3. I am posting this on several of my favorite music blogs...

Two tracks of ambient music to share with you and your readers in thanks for all the great music you share...

"Track 7" was improvised live to two track with a trio I played in a few years back- para!helion: trumpet, dumbek, and balalaika. This track is actually the first track we ever played together, and was recorded about 10 minutes after I met our Balalaika player.

Also part of a more formal project with two releases that I did with my brother in the early 90's. (Both releases are still available at CD baby:
    http://cdbaby.com/cd/pen2 and http://cdbaby.com/cd/pen )

    Tracks can be found here:

    feel free to re-post these

  5. Was there after seeing Starship in Philly the previous night. Steeler never stopped drumming, even in between sets! It was loud, intense and absolutely great! Was about #100 in line to enter and got 10 ft from stage. Folks were dropping like flies when Tuna got into the second set. I amazingly do remember some of it....

  6. I just wanted all Hot Tuna fans to know that Hot Tuna will soon be visiting Long Island, on the waterfront at Shorefront Park in Patchogue.

They are performing July 15th 2011 along with over 35 other performers that weekend. There will be plenty of other rock, jam, folk, blues & “Americana” genres as well. It’s going to be the most affordable festival in the Northeast, and features over 35 performers over three days in the rock, jam, folk, blues & “Americana” genres.

Definitely check it out, there’s more information on the Great South Bay Music Festival website!!!

  11. I was there!!! I remember a girl on line trippin' out on too much acid before the show even started, and they had to take her away in an ambulance. The band was smokin' joints the size of cigars right on stage, by the end of the show I was gasping for air and parched(remeber smoking was allowed ) you got high just breathing!! It was the SICKEST concert I ever went to, people brought cans of tuna heated them up with lighters and tossed them on stage , the band played every song they knew loud and raunchy pure seventies- at the end of the show some people got lost and walked back to Plainview on the LIE stoned and tired.I caught a ride with a guy that I had to keep nudgin' to make sure he stayed on the road.Just another teenage adventure in rockn n' roll and partying that your lucky you made it through...
